Both mankind and fish depend upon water for survival. As we selfishly alter water systems and pollute our water, we not only force species of fish to the brink of extinction, we threaten out own future survival as well. This book focuses on fourteen North American ecosystems and more than fifty fishes on the very brink of extinction.
One species of fish tolerates high borate concentrations in its only habitat; another species of fish lives in water that reaches 100F. Biomedical breakthroughs such as advances in renal physiology can be found in these vanishing fishes. A tin desert fish could create problems for the U.S. Department of Defense's MX Missile System program. Another endangered fish has the smallest habitat for any vertebrate in the world (a limestone shelf only 18 feet by 10 feet and covered with only 3 feet of water).
This book highlights dozens of endangered and threatened North American fishes through case histories in a lucid and concise style. Photographs and beautiful colour plates accompany these endangered and threatened fishes, their fragile habitats, and efforts to save them. The outlook for these precarious threatened and endangered fishes is discussed and additional reference material is provided.
