The Part I Remember, by Charles F. Waterman. Illustrations by J.M. Roever.

Stories--mostly funny, all true--of the outdoor life, by a master outdoorsman and incomparable storyteller.

There are probably more good how-to books on hunting and fishing today than ever. But if there is sometimes a missing ingredient in the works that deal so knowledgeably with the mechanics and hardware of outdoor life, it is their inability to convey much of its intangible essence. Charley Waterman is fully up to date when it comes to technical skill and ecological sophistication, as his devoted readers know, but he is delightfully old-fashioned in other ways. For her is never too preoccupied with nuts and bolts to poke a little gentle fun, or deflate an ego (especially his own), or shed a tear, and the part he remembers best form his vast store of sporting experience is usually unforgettable human.

The forty-odd pieces that make up The Parts I Remember range widely over Waterman's life, the people and places that have been part of it, and the lessons it had taught him--from the social and academic consequences of boyhood skink-trapping to the special skills required to give away uncleaned fish after ten in the evening. They represent the true cream of Waterman's writing. About a dozen of the pieces have been published before in periodicals and are simply too good not to be preserved in hard covers, and the rest are appearing for the first time.

Today's how-toers might not think that they could find indispensable at a book that is more concerned with humour and sentiment than with tippet sizes and muzzle velocities--but no one who has read this one will be willing to part with his copy.
