By Gary LaFontaine.

Gary LaFontaine gets right down to business in his discourse on meeting to the "challenge of the trout." No fussing with fixtures. He moves directly on page on to that environment which controls the life of any angler, the water itself. It sometimes amazes me just how long it takes some angling writers to get there--and how others, after they finally make it down to the bank, seem to look upon the expanse before them as a great and sterile bathtub, apparently a medium primarily designed to support their flies.

Poetically, yet with pinpoint accuracy, LaFontaine takes on his various waters one at a time, each with its inherent trickery--"The Mix of the River," "The Quiet of a Spring Creek," and "The Lure of a Mountain Lake." How clearly each companion-word conjures the proper image--the many faceted flows of a large river; the surprising complex of a stream's mini-currents; the inscrutable nature of cold- and clear-flowing spring waters; and the mystical draw of living, breathing high mountain lakes.
